Recently, construction on the Yangtze River Three Gorges No. 1, the electric cruise ship with the largest power capacity in the world, was officially launched.
This cruise ship is equipped with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) lithium-ion batteries with a power capacity of 7.5 MWh, which is equivalent to the total power capacity of more than 100 electric vehicles. It is the electric passenger vessel with the largest power capacity, the most passenger seats, and the highest level of intelligentization in the world.
The Yangtze River Three Gorges No. 1 is developed jointly by CATL, China Yangtze Power Co., Ltd., Yichang Transportation Yangtze River Cruise Co., Ltd., Wuhan Changjiang Ship Design Institution Co., Ltd., and Wuxi Silent Electric System (SES) Technology Co., Ltd.
The vessel, on which events like meetings, receptions, wedding banquets, and performances can be held, will be launched in July 2021 and put into operation in November 2021. It will mainly serve tourist routes such as the “Two Dams & The Xiling Gorge,” the Yichang Yangtze River Night Tour, and the Three Gorges Ship Lift.
Safe power on the Yangtze River
CATL is the first lithium-ion battery manufacturing company in China to pass certification of CCS’s updated Guide for Testing of Battery Power Vessels (including battery cell, battery pack, and battery management system).
The battery system of the Yangtze River Three Gorges No. 1 consists of more than 10,000 CATL LFP battery cells. Each battery cell is equipped with a temperature sensor. It can monitor the battery temperature and send an alarm when the temperature is abnormal to fully ensure product safety and reliability.
To protect the cruise ship’s battery system and considering the selectivity, a total of 15 independent battery stations are installed for power charging and discharging. The battery system is arranged in four battery compartments. In addition, a backup battery power system is installed to fully ensure the shipping stability.
This electric cruise ship is the first electric vessel in the world that adopts the solution of high-voltage power charging and low-voltage power supplement, which shortens the charging time at ports.
Green power, pioneer in emission reduction
The Yangtze River Three Gorges No. 1 will take advantage of charging by clean hydropower, which lives up to the goal of zero pollution.
If the Yangtze River Three Gorges No. 1 is put into operation, the annual reduction of polluting emissions is estimated as follows:
• Carbonic oxide: about 14t
• Nitrogen oxide: about 17t
• Inhalable particles: about 0.4t
CATL will work with all interested parties to fulfill the “Yangtze River Great Protection” strategy, assist in the creation of a beautiful Yangtze River, boost the green development of the shipping industry, and the construction of an ecological civilization.
Intelligent electrification, setting sail for ocean voyages
CATL continues to provide clean, safe, and sustainable power to energize electric vessels and greet the advent of the intelligent electrification era.
